Antnose found the weather to be much to warm for him. He found it all too bizarre to see his fellow warriors working so hard during sunhigh, they must be scorching their pelts off. He swore he even saw an apprentice sunbathing earlier! Even as he rested in the warrior’s den he could feel the heat on his dark fur though he tried to sprawl out in his nest as much as he could. Since he was a smaller tom he did not take up too much room but he was sure his constant shifting was going to annoy somebody.
Eventually it was the uncomfortable warmth that forced him to leave his nest to seek out fresher air. He made his way slowly out of the den as he felt a bit stiff from laying down for so long. Hoping to get rid of some of his stiffness he made sure to stretch carefully, letting his muscles loosened. It was as he was finally feeling a bit bouncier that he noticed how late in the day it was. The sun was already starting to set but luckily for him that meant the camp had cooled down to a more tolerable temperature.
He did not stick to the entrance of the warrior’s den for long. Now that he could manage to ignore the ache his stiffness left him, he made his way towards the fresh-kill pile. His step was surprisingly light as he walked over, he purred happily as he found a fresh looking frog he could chew on. Frog was only good if it was fresh of course.
As he settled down in a shaded area of camp he wondered where Pinebreeze and Snowtail were noticing he did not see them in the camp, he assumed the two must have taken off for a walk while the sun was setting. He frowned at himself as he realized the pain in his chest was from jealously. He knew better than to have a need to do everything with them but he wished the two at least had the decency to tell him goodbye.
He gnawed carefully at the frog, it certainly was not as easy to eat like a mouse or lizard but its chewiness he found strangely relaxing. He knew he could not spend the entire night resting though but he would take his time with his meal anyway.

plant your hopes with good seeds despite his earlier reluctance to actually show up for the hunting patrol, stormheart had found that he was enjoying himself far more than he had originally anticipated. the shelter of the pine trees cooled the territory off significantly, though there was no real escape from the new-leaf heat. he didn't mind the heat, even with his long, dark pelt, but it made him lethargic on days like this. despite the heat though, stormheart had managed to snag a few morsels of prey - nothing to brag about, but enough to fill a few hungry bellies. he just hoped someone liked frog.
slipping back into the camp through the dirtplace tunnel, he glanced towards the fresh-kill pile and was pleasantly surprised to see that the frog he had deposited there only moments before was gone. a smug smile flared up on his grey tabby face, and with a new found spring in his step, he made his way over to find something for himself. in all honesty, it was too hot to eat comfortably, but the alternative wasn't the greatest option either. with a soft paw, he pushed aside some of the heavier pieces of kill, and found a small vole that was probably only a few hours away from being considered crowfood, but that suited him just fine. picking it up with his teeth he glanced around the camp and his gaze landed on antnose - one of the senior warriors - and with a split decision, stormheart trotted over to him.
"afternoon, antnose!" settling down, he caught a glimpse of what the warrior was eating and had to force down a chuckle. so antnose enjoyed frogs! perhaps there was a way to win over the older warriors afterall even if he thought that they should all be retired already. flicking his tail beside his body, he took a bite from the vole and nearly gagged. "oh, that's disgusting." he said with a chuckle, looking up at the older warrior for any sign that he was also amused. humor was a good way to make friends right? hunting buddies? pushing the piece of prey away, he crossed his front paws, and watched antnose eat. frog had never been his first choice, but at this moment, it looked far better than his vole. "enjoying the heat? it's not bad out under the trees, but near the lake it's almost unbearable."

Antnose nodded his head in greeting when he saw Stormheart rest next to him. Normally the talkative cat would have mewed some form of greeting in return but at the moment he had been chewing on a rather tougher piece of frog, certainly the back legs of the frog had plenty of meat but the muscle was jaw achingly chewy. While he quite enjoyed the taste of frog despite the effort he was a bit more grateful for what he grabbed from the pile after seeing his companion's choice of meal.
At Stormheart's outspoken disgust Antnose did not even try to stop his snort of laughter. "Why in Starclan are you eating that?" the old tom clicked his tongue disapprovingly, is this what young warriors considered food nowadays? The vole looked like something an apprentice first hunt in leaf-bare looked like. He almost said just that to the warrior but he held back his teasing words. He did not know the younger warrior too well, who was he to mock he choice in a meal?
'enjoying the heat? it's not bad out under the trees, but near the lake it's almost unbearable'
Antnose wrinkled his nose at Stormheart's words, he did not even want to think how the heat would be without the cover of trees. "And that is why I wait until night to go out!" He said with a firm nod after he finally chewed down his piece of frog. "The hunting is terrible in the daylight with this heat, I'd much rather deal with owls than have my fur burn off." he grumbled though as he thought about it night hunting did mean that the owls just may steal any prey he did catch. He looked at Stormheart's vole again, starting to feel a little pity that he had chosen to eat that, since he had pushed it away Antnose guessed the tom was not included to eat any more of it. "Eat this other half of frog," He told him, not asking if he wanted it, "You're much too big to be living off scrawny crowfood."

plant your hopes with good seeds stormheart merely grunted a response to the tom, and his shoulders lifted slightly before falling again. he generally wasn't one to be picky about what he ate, but perhaps he did need to raise his standards a bit. starclan only knew that he would suffer from a belly ache later and find himself groveling at the paws of the medicine cat to fix his sorry mistake. alas, there was time to dwell on that later. his gaze wandered around the camp for a heart beat, before landing once again on the older warrior. night hunting? stormheart, personally, enjoyed sleeping far too much to waste precious moon light hunting.
"i'll leave fending off the owls to you then, i never have been good with birds." perhaps it had to do with he associated all avian creatures with his brother who donned the prefix of 'hawk', or maybe it was that they could move silently. agile cats and other predators had an uncanny way of making him feel insignificant and sloppy. he would never be able to move silently through the trees, his frame and messy footwork would forever be his burden. with a flick of his ears, he shrugged off the thought and once again his eyes lingered on the half eaten frog that lay at antnoses' paws. stormheart opened his mouth to decline the other toms' offer, but stopped himself. "thanks." he said smoothly, and snatched up the gummy and chewy morsel. with a great part of his jaws, the tom devoured the amphibian with haste and let out a heavy sigh.
"that hit the spot." a soft purr rumbled through his body, but it was short lived: he was still hungry. "so, how do you catch anything when you have to compete with owls? why not just take down an owl?" stormheart knew that it was far easier said than done, but he was curious to hear the toms' answer. stormheart wasn't nearly stupid enough to try it, but maybe there were some cats that were. those with an affinity for death, perhaps.
XXX. @antnose /@mercia . sorry for the wait!!
